Learn About Dalmatians
How big are Adult Dalmatians?
The Females range 40 to 55 pounds
The Males range 50 to 74 pounds.
What Coats and Colors do Dalmatians naturally come in?
Dalmatians come in short, medium and long coat. All of these are naturally occurring in the breed. The long coat hair has been easier to clean up around the home and doesn’t get embedded into you car and skin. 🙂
Dalmatians come in several colors beyond the traditional black and liver.
Also natural occurring in there breed….and almost extinct: Lemon, Orange, Black Tri, Liver Tri, Blue, Brindle and Sable.
Are Dalmatians aggressive?
There has not been any signs of aggressiveness in our dogs.
We believe this myth has come from the fact that a lot of Dalmatians SMILE. This is actually a sign of submission. We believe this myth started many, many years ago before the true understanding of dog body language was recognized.
Are Dalmatians good with kids?
Our Dalmatians have been amazing with OUR kids!!
With that said, ALL PUPPIES and DOGS NEED TRAINING.
All dogs are going to need some form of training to be a good family member. Kids also need to know what is ok and not ok to do to a dog. Both must receive some guidance in this bond.
Do Dalmatians need a lot of exercise?
All dogs will need some form of mental and physical exercise. In OUR experience, our Dalmatians have been very much a chameleon type dog. If we want to go on a 5 mile trail ride on horseback, they are right there, doing what they were bred to do.
If we are under the weather, it’s storming or having a lazy day…. they are totally fine with a whole day of Grey’s Anatomy.
Should I crate train?
ABSOLUTELY! For your puppies safety, we strongly recommend that you teach your puppy that a crate is a safe place to be. From my days of natural disaster, search and rescue… the pets that had been crate trained were much more relaxed once they were place in a crate. Be prepared. We prefer the wire crates.
Why are there deaf Dalmatians?
Deafness in Dalmatians comes from a lack of pigment in the ear. A lack of pigment in the ear causes deafness in Dalmatians. Since it is due to pigment and we have no control where spot will pop up, there is little we can preventatively do as a breeder, this is not a genetic mutation found on DNA tests, as many think.
BAER testing confirms deafness through brain wave activity.
We occassionally have deaf dogs, but have fewer than the national average for the breed. If you are interested in learning more about deaf Dalmatians or are considering owning one, you can learn more here.
Does breeding off-standard Dalmatians cause health problems?
Research shows that off standard Dalmatian color or coat does not cause health problems. There is sometimes an assumption that we are bringing in other breeds to create these colors, but all the Dalmatians used in our breeding program are registered, purebred AKC Dalmatians.
It is also assumed that in breeding for color a breeder must by-pass other health considerations to make the desired colors. For example, it’s often thought that a breeder might breed an unhealthy dog, structurally unsound dog or INBRED in an effort to create a color. Here at Missouri Dalmatians, this simply isn’t the case. We always prioritize health, low COI, struture, and temperament over any color or coat selection.
What diet is recommended for HUA Dalmatians and is it easily managed?
HUA Dalmatians have High Uric Acid, they require a low-purine diet (please note this is low-PURINE, not low protein, Dalmatians need a lot of protein 😉).
Most HUA Dalmatian owners learn to read ingredients on dog food bags, but you’ll need to be familiar with foods that are high in purine and avoid these with your dog. Main offenders (high purine foods) are peas and organ meat, which are common binding agents found in many dog foods.
Don’t forget this includes treats, too!
Common dog food brands for HUA Dalmatians include (these are safe for LUA also!):
- Purina One
- Purina ProPlan
- Diamond Naturals Chicken All Stages
- IAMs
I can always help you find a dog food in your area that’s safe for your HUA Dal.
Do Dalmatians shed a lot?
Everyday of the year. The short coats is definitely a bit more work to manage as the hair likes to embed itself into couches, rugs, your car etc. . We find it very easy to manage with our hardwood floors.
The long coats still shed (they are not a hypoallergenic breed), but the hairs don’t get embedded into the furniture or carpet in the same way, this makes it so much easier to clean up!!
We affectionately call it ✨Dalmatian glitter✨
Is My Puppy Fully Vaccinated?
Due to the age of the puppy, they will not be fully vaccinated. We send home the records of the vaccine that have been completed. You can take this paper to your vet and show them what has been done, then set up the final vaccines.
We also do a biweekly deworming and send him the next dewormer.
