Is a long coat or short coat Dalmatian right for you?
Here is our personal input directly from us, as we own both types of coats!
First off, let's cover that Long Coat Dalmatians are natural to the breed. They are not produced from an out crossed of another breed, to get this long, gorgeous coat. At this time, long coat is not accepted by AKC, but they are still eligible to enter into ALL other AKC events, but conformation. Keep in mind, standards change.
The coat of a Dalmatian, in both long and short coats, can range in how they feel. They can range from super soft to a more of a coarse type of hair.
What I have found in my experience is, that both long and short coats shed, year around. I hope you love Dalmatian glitter! The longer hair is easier to clean up, sweep, get off of your furniture etc. The short coat hair tends to dig in and has no mercy in cleaning up. It is still possible to keep a clean home with both! I find it is more challenging to keep the shorter hair under control.
If you are part of a colder climate, long coats tend to tolerate their outdoor adventures easily, when you are dealing with winter.
However, my short coat Dalmatians do not miss a chance to go out and explore the snow! They are always happy to go out and explore the woods.
I have found that the longer hair is easier to clean up!
